The failure chain

This is how a full inventory is lost.

It is never one failure. It is five, one after another, and each one takes months to settle into place. It reads like a row of dominoes because that is what it is.

  1. The condenser fans seize.
  2. The condenser stops rejecting heat and pressure climbs.
  3. The compressor, with no protections, has nothing to defend itself with and burns out.
  4. It fails on the day off: nobody hears it, nobody sees it.
  5. The badly built room does not hold the heat back, and the product crosses the safety line. There is no coming back from that.

Every one of those five links is broken by an inspection. Not one of them breaks on its own.

The case

I told him it was 500 dollars. He lost 250,000.

I found him sitting on the cash register, eyes red. He was not angry at me. He was doing the arithmetic.

Months earlier I had put in writing what needed correcting and what correcting it would cost. Five hundred dollars. It looked like an expense that could wait, and it waited.

The room did not fail that day. It failed when it was full, at the worst time of the year, with nobody on site to hear it. By the time someone opened the door the product had already crossed the temperature line. There is no coming back from that: that inventory is not recovered, not resold and not donated. It is thrown away.

I do not fix failures: I keep them from repeating. And that work looks expensive right up until the day you compare it against what not doing it cost.

What I am selling right now

Pre-Season Cold Chain Inspection

In November and December the room runs at 100%, with the door opening all day long. If something is going to fail, that is when it fails. So it gets inspected now, while there is still time to correct it.

What it covers

  • Industrial thermographic inspection with a FLIR E5-XT camera: panel, contactors and starters.
  • Operating parameters per unit: pressures, temperatures, superheat and subcooling.
  • Gaskets, doors, insulation and the defrost cycle.
  • Report with a traffic-light priority list and a deadline for each item.

The guarantee

If the inspection turns up nothing you need to correct before the season, you do not pay me. A finding means a written item in the report with evidence behind it: a thermographic image, a measured out-of-range parameter or a verifiable physical observation. If there is none, there is no fee. You get the report either way. Travel costs outside the Veracruz metropolitan area are agreed in writing beforehand and are payable regardless.

I inspect one plant per day. The October and November calendar fills in the order requests come in. No invented slots: that is simply how many days the month has.

Everything else

We do not install: we guarantee results.

I do not sell equipment and I take no manufacturer commission. Engineering is quoted and billed separately from the hardware, always.

Scope definition

Before you spend: what you actually need, at what temperature, with what turnover. You end up with a scope document you can use to request comparable quotes.

Full project engineering

Cold room design end to end: heat load calculation, equipment selection, piping, control, defrost and construction specification.

Calculation report for contractors

The signed document backing your selection: assumptions, formulas, results and reasoning. Delivered in 48 to 72 hours, remotely, anywhere in Mexico.

Second opinion before you buy

Your supplier's proposal, checked against the real load before you sign. In writing, with numbers.

Technical failure report

What failed, why, and whose responsibility it is. Independent document, usable with a supplier, an insurer or a court.

Project supervision and training

I oversee the work your contractor performs, through to commissioning. And I train your crew, on your own plant and your own equipment.

Every service is listed with its price on the Spanish services page.

Engineering is not an expense. It is insurance.

What people tell me before hiring me

Objections, answered

"We already have a maintenance contractor."

Maintenance repairs what already failed. Engineering keeps it from failing. Your service contractor keeps doing their job; I check whether the equipment you have matches the load you are asking of it. If the room is undersized, no amount of maintenance will fix that.

"It is expensive."

Compare it against one day of a stopped cold room with product inside. Do your own arithmetic: the value of that inventory, plus emergency refrigerated transport, plus the line stoppage. If your number comes out lower than the inspection, you are right and you should not hire me.

"Our supplier includes the engineering for free."

Whoever gives away the engineering charges for it in the equipment. And whoever earns a commission on the hardware should not be the one deciding which hardware you buy. I sell no equipment and take no manufacturer commission.

"We have no time right now."

That is exactly why it is done in September and not in December. In December you will not have time either, and on top of that the room will be full and the door will be opening all day. The inspection takes a few hours. The failure takes the whole week.

"Do you work outside Veracruz?"

Yes. Heat load calculations and calculation reports are delivered remotely anywhere in Mexico, in 48 to 72 hours. Site visits in Veracruz, the Gulf and wherever required. Projects executed in Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.
